Xelnath commenting on Reworks and Karma
Posted on
February 27, 2013
at 5:52 PM by Moobeat
Since I know you guys are super in need of the slightest bit of Karma rework news, here is Xelnath sharing how long the average rework process takes and teasing us with just a touch of Karma info.
"It varies dramatically based on the issues with the champion. A simple rework might be as easy as changing the resource system slightly. Those might be done in a month or two (balance testing is the main implication).
Then in the case of a mechanical upgrade, e.g. Gangplank, it might take twice as long. Thats per major iteration. If you're trying to do a visual rework, then you're taking the time it took to do a Gangplank rework, but also tying it up to an Annie-style rework where you also need to redo her skins - and the designer hookups attached to those. When asked what happened to Guinsoo's version of Karma, the one we've been hearing about on Twitter for so long, Xelnath replied:
A particularly tough champion, like Karma, who might have multiple designers taking different approaches, then working to integrate the best part and you're looking at an even longer amount of time.
The bad news is that tough reworks take longer. The good news is, I've been playing with a rough version of Scarizard's Karma and I like her. When we feel she's ready, you'll see her too."
"Scarizard should comment on exactly what happened. However, Skarma is: BAD. ASS."EDIT: Scarizard replied:
"So...in the dark lord's attempt to wrest from the members of Live Design the demonstones (our sacred charge to guard; the acquisition of which would mean an end to the balance of our game as we know it), my greatest secret has been compromised: I am indeed working on the Karma Rework.
You'll hear more than enough from me and others on this project when we're ready to present - the nefarious Soon TM - but for now all i can (and will) say is that for those of you who enjoy playing Karma as a mage and are worried that the playstyle might be jeopardized: You can sleep easy ;D
...aaaaaaand that's all you'll get from me, so don't be upset if i stay tight-lipped. It'll be ready when it's ready, and trust me - you're won't be able to keep me from talking on the forums once she's good to go."
League System Processing Delays
Posted on
February 27, 2013
at 12:24 PM by Moobeat
If you are currently seeing weird stuff like losing LP for winning a game, that's because there is currently a delay with the processing of League system data. Here is Yegg with more details:
"We're seeing league system processing delays of 10-20 minutes right now. This means that:
1. Your LP changes, series wins/losses, and promotions/demotions might not show up until ~20 minutes after your game finishes. They will still be processed eventually.
2. You might see the LP change from a previous game displayed on the stats screen. This is just a display error and doesn't mean that you've lost LP from a win. You will still gain LP from the win, it just might be delayed.
In the short term we're working on fixing the issues that are causing the processing lag, and in the slightly longer term we're working on fixing the client issue that can cause an earlier message to be displayed.
Thanks for your patience while we work to get this fixed!"

LCS: "What is Super Week" and EU Super Week Changes
Posted on
February 27, 2013
at 6:31 AM by Moobeat
In case you weren't aware, this week's LCS action is a little different than the previous weeks. This week, dubbed "Super Week", consists of 20 matches for NA and 20 matches for EU instead of the normal 8 matches per week. To accommodate this wealth of new games, each region will start a day early ( Wednesday for NA and Friday for EU ).
Here is Riot's little promo video about Super Week.
For the Super Week, NA LCS teams will play 12 games on Wednesday, 4 on Thursday, and 4 on Friday.
The EU LCS schedule, which originally mirrored the 12-4-4 of NA, has had some scheduling changes. They will now be playing 8 games Friday, 6 games Saturday, and 6 games Sunday.
Check out the NA Lolesports and the EU Lolesports website for more information or look for our LCS posts a little bit later!

ZenonTheStoic talks "Win Nao"
Posted on
February 25, 2013
at 3:28 PM by Moobeat
"Trust me, our live design dudes are very much aware of Win Nao. There's a bunch of changes being tested on PBE, but overall what it boils down to is we're reducing base damages and increasing E and R cooldowns to reduce the amount of burst he gets even while building tanky. If that doesn't work we can adjust further."When begged if he could please avoid over nerfing Xin Zhao and destroying his viability, he responded:
"I think our live design team has seriously stepped up its game. We tend to be a lot more reactive now. If we overnerf we reverse the changes, of course, but there's also that old psychological effect. One story Feralpony told me once was that we put out patch notes saying Vlad pool had lost its MS buff and received some other nerfs and Vlad was suddenly considered trash tier, with both his pick and his win rate plummeting. Problem was, the changes accidentally never went out. So after it seems like a champion was overnerfed and is trash now, we have to wait a little to make sure that's actually what happened. Remember also that Hecarim was considered weak for the longest time and has skyrocketed to the top of jungle picks now with no changes."

Grumpy Monkey talks about the Trundle VU
Posted on
February 24, 2013
at 7:03 PM by Moobeat
Grumpy Monkey posted a earlier today, talking very vaguely about the upcoming Trundle Visual Update. While it may not be much information, I'm super interested in this one so I figured I'd share. In his post, which is formatted a little strange, the bold parts are his answers to various questions.
"Hey I saw your tweet! I'll try to answer best I can. Some of your questions are things that are still being worked on.
"1. Will he be keeping his weapon? I feel like the club fills a role of "Brutal Melee" you don't see on most of the other league champions and (artistically)is supposed to be symbolic of his power. Will we see the same or a similar version of the weapon on the rework? "
Yes He still has a big club.
"2. Will he still be likable, even if he's a deebo troll. Trundle has good personality, even if it's shadowed by his ugliness. I think that is something strong that draws people to actually play trundle. He's got a **** life, but he's trying to be upbeat and people can connect with that. Will his lore be getting reworked as well with his face-lift(get it)? I think he fits, thematically, within a neat archetype of scarred hero. At the very least I'd hate to see him go from Hero of his village to "gross troll monster". He needs character, imo."
This is something we are still working on, the lore team has lots of ideas for him that are still in progress. I think no matter what he's still gonna have character.
'3. Will we be seeing anything major in his abilities being changes(outside of aesthetics) that you can speak on? If there was one thing about his abilities you could change, what would it be? For me personally, I think he'd be a much higher pick if his ult also applied a small slow or something, just for that added effect of it BEING an ult, but that's just me. I understand he has "hidden" power, but I still feel he's in need of buffing and could understand you wanting to wait until his uplift to get it going. "
I don't know about the specific levers that are being pulled. I know the look of his abilities are getting some polish, but as to the specific stats or numbers or whatever Feral Pony should be able to talk about it more than I can.
"4.How are you planning on adapting his skins t o his new look? Are they going to be one-for-one adaptations or are you looking at doing new skins that, if you already owned a trundle skin, you'd be given access to, or a refund of RP if you didn't like the new ones?"
This is a bit more complex. His skins have been refitted to the new look. How we implement the changes is still to be determined. I will say it's safe to expect messaging on this particular subject later."

Improved health bars, coming soon to a league near you!
Posted on
February 21, 2013
at 6:57 PM by Moobeat
Xelnath has an update for us about the new and improve health bars that are coming in a future patch.
"Hello Summoners,
Since the launch of the game, it's been hard to see how much health a champion has. We've revisited our assumptions in what information needs to be clearly conveyed to players and updated the champion health bars to handler higher health.
Here you can see how the original health bars worked:
Once Amumu passed 3,200 health, the notches stopped increasing and it is very hard to count how much health an opponent has.
Here, Amumu is modelling the new health bars:
When you cross the 1,000 health threshold, a full, dark tick now appears. This makes it easier to see how many thousands of health your opponent has.
While we tried many, many iterations, we chose this one because it balanced between familiarity (no need to re-learn what 1 tick means!) and clarity past 2,000 health.
What do you think?"
He also mentioned the capability to edit things yourself, should you be sufficiently capable to do so. Click here for more info on that.

Statikk Explains the recent PBE AP Tryndamere Nerfs
Posted on
February 21, 2013
at 1:56 AM by Moobeat
"Firstly, as always with PBE changes we are constantly in iteration and what you guys see can sometimes even be an initial pass that has been made largely on theory to put into playtesting (which is true in the case of these AP Tryndamere changes).
Currently, the change on PBE has Bloodlust's heal AP ratio at 0.2 + 0.01 per Fury consumed (1.2 total AP ratio). The AP ratios actually had already been readjusted to 0.3 + 0.012 per Fury consumed (1.5 total AP ratio which is the same as Live) before this PBE build was even sent out earlier today.
No, we are not nerfing Tryndamere because he is FotM or because Morello hates you. Power and balance aside, the core issue here is that due to the fact that the AP ratio on Bloodlust is 100% loaded into the base value, AP Tryndamere completely trivializes the actual intended play and counterplay of Bloodlust. We don't mind Tryndamere healing for huge amounts if he has to work for it and his opponents get chances to deny him his resource and punish him for playing poorly. On the other hand, we are not okay with him sustaining back to full Health by mindlessly activating Bloodlust on cooldown with complete impunity while he hides in a brush or wanders from lane to lane.
Although this change obviously has power impacts (yes, it's a nerf), this change is about preserving Tryndamere's intended gameplay and the counterplay that should exist playing against him whether he's building AD or AP."

Since a lot of people have been asking, here is a small PSA:
The PBE has been updated on 2/17 with an air only patch which temporarily removed Replays and Quinn and Valor. Additionally a small hot fix ( ~10 mb in size on NA ) was deployed to live. There hasn't been a post on what exactly was in it, but it's likely just various bug fixes. I also noticed the "NULL" error when checking profiles is gone, woohoo.
The PBE patch was probably just to test a few bug fixes before they pushed the hot fix to live. I would expect Quinn and Valor / Replays back soon :).

2/16 Hot fix - League updates and bug fixes
Posted on

at 5:11 PM by Moobeat
If you were wondering what exactly went out in that hot fix earlier today, Yegg just posted details on the bug fixes and updates that were made to the League system.
"Hey all,
Earlier today we hotfixed in some updates to the League System. These changes are intended to address some valid complaints about the harshness and frequency of demotions as well as frustrations surrounding the discrepancy between LP gains and losses for many Division I players. We've also included a few bugfixes. Here's the full list:
- Increased the requirements for being demoted so that demotions will happen less frequently
- Increased the length of the demotion immunity grace period that occurs after being placed in a new division
- Players and teams that are demoted will now have 75 LP in the new division rather than 50
- Tweaked LP gains and losses for players and teams in Division I who haven't passed the additional checks to qualify for the next tier
--- LP changes from both wins and losses will now be reduced in this situation, rather than just wins
--- Reductions in LP changes will now kick in earlier and more gradually rather than only starting near 100 LP
- "Loss forgiven" during server issues will now prevent demotions as well as series losses
- Summoner name changes are now properly handled by the league system
- Fixed a bug that could occasionally cause players to gain more LP than expected in Challenger tier
As always, we'll be monitoring the effects of these changes and we'll be making further tweaks over the coming weeks, so feel free to post your thoughts on the current state of the system once you've had a chance to play some games.
Thanks and gl hf!"

Looks like a patch is coming just in time for Valentine's Day! The servers will be coming down at 2 AM PST for NA, for 4:00 EUW, and 3:00 for EUNE on 2/14.
Here is the NA announcement from Filthy Animals.
No official word on what's going to be in the patch yet, but my educated guess would be it would add in Debonair Jayce / iBlitzcrank, and the balance we saw on the PBE over the last few weeks ( Nasus, item adjustments, etc ).
Here is the NA announcement from Filthy Animals.
"Summoners,
On 2/14/2013, starting at 12:30 AM PST, ranked queues will be disabled in preparation for server maintenance. At 2:00 AM PST, the servers will be shut down and all games currently in progress will end in a draw and stats will not be recorded. We estimate the Fields of Justice will be unavailable for 6 hours."

Vi, Xin, and J4 being looked at for Nerfs. ( Updated )

Seems like Vi might be getting some nerfs in an upcoming patch. In a thread referring to her as "tearing up solo queue", Morello chimed in and said:
Edit: Statikk has posted an update on the prospect of nerfing J4 - he's not getting nerfed directly.
"Vi is quickly becoming the worst-kept secret. :)When questioned about Xin Zhao and Jarvan IV also being quite troublesome lately, he responded:
The team is going to be touching this next patch"
"Likely here as well."
Edit: Statikk has posted an update on the prospect of nerfing J4 - he's not getting nerfed directly.
"We're not nerfing Jarvan, at least not directly.
In the upcoming patch, we are fixing a bug that was released last patch where his passive is dealing max Health damage against minions and monsters instead of current Health. This is artificially inflating the speed of his clear times and increasing his effectiveness on bigger objectives like Dragon and Baron as well which is an advantage Jarvan simply doesn't need considering all the other things he brings to the table.
Let's be clear though, Season 3 has changed the landscape of the game. Though someone like Jarvan has stayed untouched for a long time and has not been an issue up until this bug, it could be fully possible that a champion needs to be addressed due to other changes that have occurred in the game. Just like some champions have gotten weaker (for example as you guys say Irelia), some have gotten stronger. We need to constantly assess things within the context of the current state of the game (not to say that we don't take into account potential future states of the game in our decisions).
Once again, we're not directly nerfing Jarvan, but we will be monitoring him closely following the upcoming bug fix."

Morello wants to do Dragon Master Swain

at 6:36 PM by Moobeat
Morello had some good news for fans of the community created "Dragonmaster Swain" skin idea.
"We will do this skin - I'm sure of that."When asked about a time frame, he then followed up with:
"After - Swain doesn't actually need a new skin (<3 Tyrant), we'd be doing this one JUST to meet the community request. It's a cool skin idea, so we'll make it."Here is the massive community thread about Dragonmaster Swain, although Morello was very clear about setting the communities expectations on this one:
"This is important - and I hate to be this guy - but I specifically will not agree to meet anything laid out in a spec. I think setting that expectation that we'll implement, line-by-line, a suggestion is really dangerous.
We will make Dragon Master Swain, and it will be amazing. Will it be the exact same as every piece of the idea? Not likely."

Here is RiotJaws with the big news about Riot's new Collegiate program aimed at helping college and university students discover fellow student players, better organize clubs / groups, and compete against each other!
"When it comes to your school, pride matters; when it comes to playing League of Legends, you love entering the queue with friends. We’re excited to announce a new program that brings you the best of both worlds.
With the Collegiate Program you can create or search for a League of Legends club at your school, take part in challenges, request event support and learn about how to nab some kick-ass swag. The new page is for experienced players looking for fresh competition, members of existing clubs looking to join forces with Riot and those who want to find out more about the game their friends are playing. It also gives existing Riot-supported clubs an opportunity to post a club profile page or collaborate with other organizers in the community.
As your club grows, you can host LAN tournaments, pubstomps and even battle other clubs in inter-collegiate competition. Not interested in day-to-day administration? No problem. Take advantage of the site to stay up-to-date on activities that you might have missed and compete at your own pace.Sounds cool, right? Head on over to the Collegiate program page to search to see if your school already has a club or to start your own!
TESPA—Everything’s Big in Texas
As a testament to the power of collegiate clubs, the Texas eSports Association (TESPA) has grown into one of the largest and most ambitious collegiate gaming organizations in the world. Players of all skill levels from eight of Texas’ largest schools joined together to dominate the collegiate esports scene.
Their efforts culminate in an invitational tournament known as the Lone Star Clash. The second time around, the tourney brought in internationally famous pro League of Legends teams to showdown on Summoner’s Rift.
Top-notch broadcasting and expert commentary by Rivington and Scarra helped make Lone Star Clash 2 a resounding success showcasing up-and-coming talent alongside the pro stalwarts. RiotKiddington explains Queue Dodging
Posted on
February 11, 2013
at 5:39 AM by Moobeat
Since the S3 reintroduction of more than a time penalty for dodging ranked games, many players have been wondering why an LP penalty, or any penalty at all, is necessary.
In response to some forum discussion about this new penalty, RiotKiddington has stepped up to the plate to shed some light on this complicated situation.
In response to some forum discussion about this new penalty, RiotKiddington has stepped up to the plate to shed some light on this complicated situation.
"Your thread covered many topics, let’s just discuss about queue dodge for the sake of time. Please excuse my poor English
Queue dodging is a complex problem that involves much deliberation and consideration. We have a queue dodge system with a queue dodge penalty because we need to strike a balance between the need of players who wish to play the game and those who want to dodge the game (of any reason). Why Riot not just have a “free queue dodge” system of some form? The answer to this question is simple because it is too prone to abuse.
There is a segment of our player base that loves to queue dodge for the sake of dodging. These players would dodge a game with or without any reason. Perhaps they did it because they do not understand the implications of their actions, or perhaps they have alternative motives. We need the penalty to prevent (some) players from dodge the games repeatedly.
Then there is another segment of our player base that will queue dodge for competitive reasons. Let’s take current ARAM game mode as an example, the ARAM mode supposed to be all random in champion selection, and by logical extension of ARAM design, there should never be any “troll pick” or “mid or feed”. In reality: ARAM games currently have one of the highest queue dodge rate. Based on this information, have you considered why that is the case? Were these queue dodgers indifferent about their games? Or they cared too much about their games, and they will, at any instance of perceived disadvantage dodge the queue? One can’t deny there is a segment of our player base that would utilize the dodge system to enhance their competitive advantage if no strong discouragement exists. We need the queue dodge penalty to keep this group of players in check.
One group of players we also need to take into consideration are those who want to play the game. There are times when I have a perfect team and the other side queue dodged (for whatever reasons), and this really sucks for me. Now if this happens 7 times in a row, it would really make me feel bad. This is not without history, we have seen last year when the Dominion queue dodge system failed to enforce queue penalty for months, the consequences of that bug were devastating. It will take 7-8 tries before a player can successfully launch a game. Once we fixed the dodge penalty bug, the number of tries needed to launch a game dropped dramatically.
There are many other scenarios that we can discuss in the future (regarding League Points). We designed the dodge penalty after carefully analyze the data we have gathered from years of observation. The penalty system is designed to be strong enough to discourage repeat queue dodging but it is weak enough to allow occasional queue dodge. In the end, it is all about an act of balance to improve overall player experience."
