Aatrox Champion Update

Following his gameplay trailer and update reveal, Aatrox's champion update has landed on the PBE including a new kit, updated visuals, and a new splash art! Before we get into the darkin details, check out the Aatrox Bug thread from Riot Szymba:
"Hello everyone!
As you've probably noticed, Aatrox's update is now available on the PBE! We're still busy knocking out the last few assets, and are steadily burning down our bug count as well. If you happen to come across something odd during your time playing as, with, or against Aatrox on the PBE, please let us know through the Report a Bug Tool with a description of what happened and whatever other information you can provide.
I'll be looking through this thread and the reports from the tool for the rest of the 8.13 cycle and beyond.

But after centuries of imprisonment, Aatrox was the first to find freedom once more, corrupting and transforming those foolish enough to try and wield the magical weapon that contained his essence. Now, with stolen flesh, he walks Runeterra in a brutal approximation of his previous form, seeking an apocalyptic and long overdue vengeance."

Icon/Wards Collections

New collections are headed to the PBE for icons and wards, including descriptions (hover over!), rarity organizations, and more!
Here's Riot Mort with a bugs & feedback thread for the icons/wards collection page that will be testing on the PBE in the 8.13 cycle:
"Hello everyone! Riot Mort here with a long desired feature finally coming to League. In Collection, we’ve added tabs for Summoner Icons and Ward Skins! Yes, you can finally see your Ward Skin collection from outside Champ Select.
We’ve added some key features into these collections that we’d love some feedback on.
-Descriptions - When you mouse over an icon or ward, it should tell you where it came from or how it was acquired.
-Sorting - From sets to alphabetical to release date, you can sort these collections in a variety of ways.
-View Unowned - You can take a look at all the existing icons/wards you don’t have, and even look into League’s history.
But probably the biggest new feature here is rarity. Now icons and wards have been assigned a rarity based on how difficult to acquire they were.
-Ultimate (Orange) - The rarest tier. For extremely difficult accomplishments or exclusive participation.
-Mythic (Purple) - Icons that took a lot of effort to achieve, or show a high level of time commitment or skill.
-Epic (Blue) - Icons that came as part of a limited time bundle, or showing high participation/skill.
-Rare (Green) - Legacy icons, bundled icons, event participation, eSports event icons, and other skill/participation icons.
-Normal (No color) - Purchased, given, eSports, or participation.
Which icons/wards are in each category is purposely left to be fluid and open to interpretation. However we really want feedback on this, so if you feel a specific icon isn’t in the right category or something else just doesn’t feel right, let us know. We think this feature is important moving forward, and we want to get it right for you guys.
Thanks everyone. And have fun on PBE!"

Cursor Update on PBE v2

Here's SpaceNorth with a new thread on continued cursor update testing in 8.13:
"Hello everyone! Thank you for all the feedback we’ve gotten so far on the new cursor. We’ve been reading through all of it and making a bunch of iterations internally, and today we have a fresh version to share here and on PBE to get more eyes and feedback.
Cursor Comparisons
Enemy Hover
Enemy and Ally Hover (GIF)
Comparisons with Angles
Note: The version you see here is not the final art - we’re focusing on shapes right now, and then will polish after those are locked. :)
As you can see from the gif and images, we’re trying out a few things here. Let’s talk about each one.
1. Shape change on Enemy Hover
2. Different angle
3. New shape with internal cut-out
1) Shape change on Enemy Hover
The most common piece of feedback we got was around needing a shape change on Enemy Hover to get that instant feedback. We've tried a bunch of different forms for this internally—other color changes, switching to a targeting reticle shape, and a couple others.
After those attempts, we’re testing out an update to the existing sword-shape for multiple reasons: It gets us a clear shape change without significant distraction, it can work at similar angles to the primary cursor, and of course we get to benefit from everyone’s existing familiarity with this shape.
That being said, the old sword had a few problems of getting lost in minion waves and during team fights because of its slimmer profile, which is part of why we were looking at other shapes originally. We’re trying to mitigate this by having a flat, bright space in the blade, but are definitely interested in feedback there.
2) Different Angle
We originally started with a 45 degree angle because that's what the legacy gauntlet cursor uses. However, even though the gauntlet was set to a 45 degree angle, the asymmetrical shape of the hand makes the overall form look like it’s pointing more upward than 45 degrees.
Since the new cursor has a symmetrical shape, its weight is evenly distributed along whatever axis it is placed upon (45 degrees in this case), avoiding the optical illusion of being pointed at a different angle. This led to the new cursor sometimes feeling like it bent to the left, especially when interacting with flat interfaces like the store. By tilting the cursor so the left edge is on the 0 degree line and the right edge is on the 45 degree line, it should feel more familiar to your experience both in and out of League (the 0 degree angle is what most applications and operating systems use).
3) New Shape with Internal Cut-Out
We’re also trying out more of a diamond shape with an internal cut-out. We saw some minor feedback about the first version looking too simplistic, so we’re hoping this version feels more interesting (and more fitting with League’s other UI) without giving up clarity.
Having the cut-out in the middle also gives us a useful space to communicate non-critical information where a shape change is overkill. For example, the internal diamond could turn blue when hovering over an ally, as shown above."

Early Snowball 8.13

Here's a thread from PhRoXzOn about changes to help reduce early snowball in the 8.13 PBE cycle:
"Hello,
Since it missed Quick Gameplay Thoughts, we are looking at reducing early snowball. Target is 8.13 and the changes are intended to be relatively low disruption (not particularly noticeable, but have good impact).
We have seen early snowball increase slowly, but steadily over this season. As I pointed out in a reddit post earlier this week, this could be due to any number of factors that our data analysts are picking apart and will hopefully share when we have stable results.
Some of the tactics we're looking at:
  • Re-introducing the bounty on 2 kills and potentially a small increase to bounties 3 and above.
  • Early death timer reductions from levels 1-7, while keeping an eye on what this does to teleport summoner.
  • Outer turret global gold reduction 100 >>> 50.
What we're not looking at for this pass:
  1. Towers getting more tanky, especially in laning phase.
I know this is a common complaint, but we have reasons to believe that elongating laning phases is not the best course of action right now. This is partially because having elongated laning phases means more chance for lanes to snowball out of control without meaningful chances for other lanes to intervene as well as just reducing the amount of game variance (through interaction with other champions). I personally think the average length of laning phases is about right at the moment, but the standard deviations (the length of the longest laning phases or the shortness of the shortest laning phases) are too large. This can result in some unsatisfying laning phases where the first turret goes down as early as 7 minutes.
It also has the tendency to make games stall out even longer when already won, so I would want us to have a more robust (and flexible with game state) solution. Examples here could be: killing towers doesn't grant as much gold (which is frontloaded snowball), but instead grants a deferred or distributed bonus of some sort. Tower fall times could also be regulated more strictly (ie. very hard to drop before a certain time and easy to drop after a certain time)."

PBE Chat with the Playtest Team - 8.13

Here's Riot Novalas with the 8.13 PBE cycle PBE chat with the Playtest team:
"Hey guys!
I’m Riot Novalas. I'm a QA Analyst on Riot’s Playtest Team, a group of high elo players who work on Core Gameplay playing new and in dev content before they’re released. It’s our job to test the changes that our designers come up with to ensure that we’re introducing positive changes to League in terms of both balance and fun.
Lots of changes are planned in the upcoming patches and a lot of content is or has been on PBE for awhile. We’d like you guys to talk to us about your questions or concerns with upcoming content - We’ve tested a lot of it and would be more than happy to give you guys insight on how the changes are panning out. If you’d like us to test something in particular out - let us know and we can try to get it into a playtest.
We've got a new and improved challenger coming to the rift on the PBE this patch. It's not Bbtrox or Cctrox. We've got Aatrox and he's undergone a large VGU. Myself and Riot Endstep were the primary playtesters for Aatrox so if you want our insight on favorite runes, builds, and optimizations, ask away!
Let's make Patch 8.13 launch as smoothly as possible!

Cursor Update on PBE v3

Here's Fearless with a new iteration on the cursor update that should be coming to the PBE this cycle:
"Hey all, here’s one more iteration during this PBE cycle. In this round, we’ve been focusing on the following areas:
Enemy Hover (Sword) Iterations - shape, size, and color
Pass on visuals to feel closer to League style (WIP)
For this round we focused on updating the render quality of our assets to feel a bit more like League but still contrast the colors and vfx that happen in game so you don’t lose track of the cursor. The renders are not final, and if we move forward with these designs, they will still need some polishing.
We have also heard a good amount of feedback on the sword feeling small or the shape change not giving enough feedback on when you’re hovering an enemy. So in this iteration, we are adding color combined with the shape shift to a bigger sword to give you that quick feedback when you need it.
Color can be tricky - the legacy cursor often had problems with losing a red sword in a red wave of minions. To solve that, we’re trying out a red sword but with a brighter white edge and tip to help stand out against all the red in the game.
These visuals are still a work-in-progress and we’d love to get your feedback. Thanks!"

Miscellaneous

  • Dark Star Cho'Gath continues testing on the PBE for release in 8.13 after debuting in the last cycle. Look for the splash art to hit the PBE soon!
  • Some tooltips now allow you to press [shift] to see more information, usually reserved to additional rule text or explanations. Here's an example using the new Aatrox Q - pressing shift reveals it does reduced damage to minions but increased damage to monsters.

  • Another batch of skin bios have been added! Here's Hextech Annie for example:
"A scientific prodigy even among the intellectuals of the Hextech renaissance, Annie's beautiful, living warbears are among the most prized innovations of the era. Her most mysterious creation, Tibbers, is always close at hand -- her confidant, friend, and monstrous bodyguard."
