Quick Gameplay Thoughts: May 24

Check out Meddler's quick gameplay thoughts for May 24th, including thoughts on recent work on a few champions:
"Hi folks,
Usual Disclaimers
These posts will often contain talk about future work we're doing, or planning to do, that isn't yet guaranteed to ship. The nature of the work could change or, depending on what we discover, projects mentioned may get delayed or even stopped. If you'd like to see a Tweet whenever a new one of these posts goes up: https://twitter.com/RiotMeddler
State of work on a few champs
Not much new that's ready to talk about this week. Going to do some quick run throughs on current plans for a few small champ updates as a result.
Teemo
Teemo changes have been on the PBE for a while now and we've also recently got some on site user lab testing done on them. Seeing some positive sentiment and some concerns. Plan is to try another iteration as a result, with a particular focus on improving the E, then reassess overall state of the project.
Aatrox
Aatrox changes have been live for a bit now. So far we're still cautiously optimistic about them, with the revive no longer being reliably available showing particular promise. Looks a little strong in high MMR play, not planning on nerfs in 9.11 at least though. Very interested to see if changes have addressed some of what made him so pick/ban in pro, even when weak elsewhere, and should see pro play on them shortly.
Yuumi
We're starting to see Yuumi succeed quite well for people who've played her a lot. Player sentiment's also shifted from a clear consensus she's weak (pre hotfix) to a wide range of opinions from too weak to balanced to too strong. Holding off on any changes beyond some low power impacting useability stuff and bug fixes in 9.11 as a result. Trying to be cautious about not buffing needlessly if we can help it, given that would force future nerfs.
Diana
As with Teemo we've had some Diana changes on the PBE for a bit. Feedback on those has generally been on the more negative side. We do think they accomplish some of our goals with the project, but aren't confident about the overall package landing in a good spot. Plan is to cut a lot of the changes as a result. Likely means we ship some small adjustments now and then consider Diana for further work sometime a bit later in the year."

When asked about Ryze, Meddler noted:
"We've got some changes in testing, aimed at making his skill floor friendlier in large part. Hoping to have something in for 9.12, depends on how playtesting goes though, first version showed promise but has issues, working on a second version now."

As for the results of the VGU vote, he replied:
"Should have results ready to share within the next 1-2 weeks."

On Sylas, Meddler commented:
"We're looking at some potential changes for 9.12. Main themes being lower waveclear, slightly more single target damage, shield less reliable (current experimental test being E2 gives shield if it hits an enemy)."

And on Rammus, he noted:
"Looking at some simple nerfs for him in 9.11. Lower ult damage and less damage on AAs from passive potential targets."

Meddler gave his opinion on Jayce:
This is likely an unpopular opinion with some, but my personal take is that Jayce has never had a healthy pattern. When he's been successful it's been in ways that leave his opponents with few ways to interact well enough with him in lane or later. Not expecting this current nerf will do anything other than band aid things a little. Wouldn't want to sink a lot of time into Jayce either though until other champs in significantly greater need of work get help first.
Sylas wise we believe wave clear to be a good angle to hit. Tends to be particularly valuable in pro versus other contexts. Means potentially pulling power out of that and then seeing if we can put it elsewhere (though that bit's likely to happen in a follow up patch if so)."

When asked about the recent smaller scale updates that have been testing, Meddler commented:
"Sentiment around us doing such mini updates seems to have been pretty positive. For any given one opinion has been more varied though, hence some getting reassessed. In terms of future work some of these have been projects to take advantages of a bit of spare time between other work (e.g. Blitzcrank), others have been prioritized because of a pressing issue (e.g. Aatrox). Would expect the latter to keep happening regularly, the former to be more variable based off other projects needs over the year."

Team Pass & Fan Pass Hit the Rift on May 31

Check out details on the new Team Pass and Fan pass coming in Patch 9.11 - "Introducing Team Pass and Fan Pass, two experiences that will give players new ways to show off their esports fandom and support their leagues and pro teams."
"Today we are announcing Team Pass and Fan Pass, two experiences that will give players new ways to show off their esports fandom and support their leagues and pro teams. —————–
We think it’s important that, as our sport continues to grow, our leagues, teams, and players share in our combined success. We’re very excited about these launches and will be working to learn as much as possible about which aspects esports fans across the world value most as we look to expand in the future!"

Pro View: Leveling Up the Esports Viewing Experience

Also from LolEsports are details on Pro View - "Pro View will give fans greater control of their viewing experience and the ability to follow individual players through a suite of long-requested features."
"Starting with the 2019 Summer Split, Pro View will give fans greater control of their viewing experience and the ability to follow individual players through a suite of long-requested features. Pro View, League’s newest esports streaming product, will be available for purchase through watch.lolesports.com and proceeds will directly support teams in the LEC & LCS. In addition to Point of View streams for every player in every game, Pro View will include:
  • Multiview: Watch up to four synchronized streams (POV or main event) at once during live games and VODs
  • Advanced Timeline: Kills, tower takedowns and other big plays are marked right on the timeline, and clicking a marker jumps to that moment in the game
  • Watch With Friends: Share a personalized Pro View URL to synchronize your timeline with friends.
  • All Pro View features will available on VODs as well as during live games
At launch Pro View will be available for two leagues, the LCS & the LEC, and will come in two different levels, Regional Access & All Access. We will be adding additional leagues and content over time.
  • Regional Access will allow you to use Pro View for a single League of your choice
  • All Access will allow you to use Pro View for both Leagues (LCS & LEC)
Pro View is the latest update to watch.lolesports.com and represents our commitment to the long term success of our partnered teams. Revenues from Pro View will directly support professional teams competing in our leagues around the world. It’s critical that as our sport grows, teams and players share in that success.
Over the past few months, watch.lolesports.com has seen the launch and expansion of Team Pass & Fan Pass, Watch Rewards, Global Schedules, Global VoDs and a new and improved Live Stats System. In the future you’ll continue to see us invest in improving watch.lolesports.com and further integrating it with the core League of Legends game. Our goal is to create a holistic viewing experience that’s optimized for League of Legends esports while still allowing fans to watch on the streaming platform of their choice. We are committed to growing the product in a way that makes watching and interacting with our sport a more engaging experience.
Q&A
Why is Pro View a paid product?
As our sport continues to grow, it’s important that our teams and leagues share in our combined success. Allowing fans to directly support their favorite pros, teams, and leagues will ensure LoL Esports and League continue to thrive and contribute to our goal of becoming a true multi-generational sport

If I buy Pro View, where does the money go?
Revenue from Pro View will be split between regional leagues and teams to continue growing LoL Esports.

How much will Pro View cost?
The Summer Split will cost $14.99 (LCS) & €14.99 (LEC) and grant access until worlds. Future events will grant access to more content and, as a result, may carry a different price.

Does this mean free features are going away?
No. We want to keep the free experiences free and will continue to invest in building out free features. You’ll still continue to be able to watch League of Legends competitions on your favorite platforms.

When will my League get Pro View?
We’re actively working to get Pro View up and running for more leagues, and while we can’t share any definitive dates right now, we’re extremely excited by the potential. We’re also exploring adding support for additional languages.

I’m having a technical issue with Pro View. Where can I go for help?
Visit the support page and, if your question isn’t answered there, please submit a ticket.

I’ve got an idea to improve Pro View. Where can I share it?
We’re all ears. Give us your feedback on Reddit, the forums or your preferred social media platform."

Ask Riot: Draw for RP?

Check out this week's Ask Riot: "RP Art, mastery tokens, playtesting, and petting Yuumi."
Take a moment to enjoy the masterpiece above before moving on to read about playtesting, mastery tokens, Yuumi, and RP Art. (Look again, just to make sure you appreciate the attention to detail.)
How many drawings have you gotten for RP Art? How many Riot Points have you given out?

For starters, I think RP Art tickets are magical! There’s so much passion and talent in the drawings players send us, from painstakingly made color-by-pixel MS Paint art that competes with Photoshop prodigies, to players who think drawing a red circle and indicating it’s Vlad in his pool is a pretty funny thing to send us (it is). If you’d like to see that masterpiece and other amazing art, check out this video
In the last 11 months, we’ve received a little over 24,000 RP Art Tickets worldwide (mostly reasonable requests), and we’ve been able to ensure these players get the little thing they need. If we go back to the beginning, we estimate we’ve received over 300,000 RP Art submissions. If each player was granted about 25RP, then we’ve given out about 7,500,000 RP since the program began. And it’s been worth every glorious drawing.
If you’re ever just a little RP away from unlocking that one skin or icon you’re hungry for, feel free to reach out to Player Support
NA Live Ops (formerly good at League of Legends)
How can I come to Riot to test out new champions or larger VGUs?
During champion development, we host several playtests or “player labs” where we bring in external players (non-Riot employees) to play the in-progress kit and give feedback on the visual and narrative concepts. These players can be anyone who lives within the Southern California area, since that’s where our main headquarters are located. Travel makes it cost-prohibitive to open this up to any player, but we try to be aware of and deliberate with our sampling given this restriction.
To be eligible, you need to be an active League player, generally be sportsmanlike without any banned accounts (we had to… relax this requirement when bringing in Draven mains to playtest Kai’Sa), and again we typically only grab players in the greater LA area.
We also occasionally invite and fly out more well-known champion enthusiasts/one-tricks with large communities to give in-depth feedback on their champion if it’s receiving a VGU. In the past we’ve had IreliaCarriesU (Irelia), Professor Akali (Akali), and Malicious Metal (Mordekaiser) give feedback on their champions. We try to stay in touch afterwards too as sometimes there are uh, lingering issues to be resolved post launch (*cough Irelia and Akali cough*).
I’ve personally shown new champions to thousands of players before launch, and while I’m transitioning away from running player labs for new champions, the Champions team is dedicated to running these for each new and reworked champion at multiple stages of development. Make sure your email is up-to-date because that’s how we’ll reach out if you’re invited to a playtest!

Why can’t we get level 6 and 7 mastery tokens from ARAM?
When Champ Mastery gives you a grade, it takes into account your champion, your role, and the game mode you’re currently playing in. And while getting an S or S+ on Howling Abyss is impressive, it’s being graded on a completely different scale than Summoner’s Rift. Depending on who and how you’re playing, it might be much easier (or harder).
With Champ Mastery 6 and 7 as the current peak of the Champ Mastery system, we want to be sure that those ranks mean the same thing to everyone. If we started giving out Champ Mastery tokens for ARAM grades, that accomplishment would get muddier. That being said, we don’t like that this leaves ARAM-only players out of the top of the Mastery system, and we’re looking at how we can change that without changing the meaning of Mastery 6 and 7.

If I’m allergic to cats will I have to stay away from Yuumi, or can I pet her because she’s magical?

Yuumi is currently the keeper of the powerful and sentient Book of Thresholds, but she also has her own innate magical powers of protection. One of these abilities is her magical shield. Luckily for you, this shield also applies to common pollutants and allergens!
So as long as Yuumi activates her shield, her purple fur is blocked from reaching your nose, and you are safe from sneezes. Just don’t let her scratch you—her magical cat claws can poke through her shield and cause nasty hives.
A further note… the strange spirit realm atmosphere of Bandle City nullifies all allergens, so if you’re able to visit Yuumi in her natural habitat, you will be able to pet her without fear of an allergy attack.

Have a question? Click on the button below, sign into your League account, and ask away.
We’ll do our best to read every question, but we can’t guarantee they’ll all get answers. Some questions may already be answered elsewhere, and some won’t be right for Ask Riot. This isn’t the best place to announce new features, for example, and we might skip conversations on issues we’ve talked about in depth before (though we can clarify individual points).
We are listening, though, so keep asking. We’ll make sure your questions are heard by the Rioters working on the stuff you’re curious about."

Trials Standings: Week Two

Here's Bilby with a look at Trials standings in Week 2:
"It’s been two weeks since the Mid-Season Trials began, and each week will matter more than the last. Here’s the score breakdown for this week:
House Warband
House United
House Faceless
House Council
You have two weeks left to get in the game. Earn points for yourself and your house through missions and MSI watch rewards until June 2, 2019, at 11:59 PM PT
New missions are available this week. Check the Event Article for the full list of Trials missions.
Remember: Only missions that show your house icon count towards your house’s progress. Missions from the Trials Pass won’t count towards the competition, and points awarded increase each week so everyone has the chance for a comeback.
At the end of the event, everyone in the winning house will receive a permanent golden house emote. Players in that house will also retain their house spawn animations for a period of time after the event.
It’s time to represent. Good luck."

Miscellaneous

  • New comic inspired apparel is now in the Merch store, featuring designs for Katarina, Olaf, and Kennen:
"Your weekly dose of server problem-os, NA League news, and other!
Yuumi is a cat-astrophe (depending on if you hate or love her), congrats to G2 for winning MSI (depends if you like or hate it), Game of Thrones ended (might hate or love it) ((I’m sensing a trend here…)) and the top 8 college LoL teams face off for the championship this week!
PS: Awesome MS painting of Yummi here
Follow-Ups:
  • Mac voice still not working properly Reached out to Apple for assistance (Checking entitlements).
Server Stuff:
  • Vintage Icon Borders Not Appearing (5/17, ~4 days) A server change leads to PS noticing borders aren’t visible properly in loading screens. Investigation shows the wrong ID was added for Project Skins, causing borders to fail. A redeploy with the correct config fixed the problem.
  • Players unable to log into Chat (5/17, ~27 minutes) A server change is implemented, and PS notifies the NOC players are being disconnected from chat. After checking the changelist, steps could have impacted the chat system. The server changes were rolled back, fixing the chat issues. Investigation into the change steps and why it caused the system to fail are ongoing.
  • Game servers freezing (5/20, ~73 minutes) A few game servers start to have reconnect spikes, which coincide with increased game crashing reports. NOC resets the affected servers, and players are able to correctly rejoin the problematic servers.
  • Game servers freezing (5/21, ~ 2 hours) A few game servers start to have reconnect spikes, which coincide with increased game crashing reports. NOC resets the affected servers, and players are able to correctly rejoin the problematic servers.
  • Players unable to log into LoL (5/22, ~ 71 minutes) NA starts to see increased numbers of NA logins failing, far above normal levels. A quick analysis of the symptoms point to a recent change. Rolling back the change bring login problems back to optimum levels. Investigation into the change steps and why it caused the system to fail are ongoing.
Game Stuff:
  • None this week
Player Support Issues:
We’re seeing a spike in account recovery tickets, please make sure your account is secured as best as possible here with these steps.
