Changes to matchmaking parameters and possible future addition of ARAM queues.

How is everyone doing? Still waiting for your respective server to come up? Here is a red post collection to help stir things up!
Continue reading for a set of red post concerning the number of wins a player has factoring into the match making system and an update on the possibility of ARAM matchmaking.

Adding [Number of Wins] to the matchmaking parameters.
Here is Lyte's announcement that matchmaking now takes into account the number of wins an opponent has.
"We recently just rolled out a beta test of a new matchmaking change that is live in NA only. When we make sure it has the desired effects, we'll turn it on globally.

--

The matchmaker will now take into account the [Number of Wins] a player has in every matchmade queue (Normal SR, Normal TT, Ranked Solo/Duo, etc).

This means that for the first few minutes, the matchmaker will attempt to find teammates and opponents that have a relatively similar [Number of Wins] as you in addition to trying to find teammates and opponents that also have a similar [Elo]. However, this does not mean it's impossible to get matched into a game with a large difference in [Number of Wins]--it's just more rare.

Happy to discuss the matchmaking change here or any other matchmaking questions players might have. For reference, I've provided some older matchmaking discussions we've had in the past:

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/....php?t=1827767
http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/....php?t=1976101

PS - RiotKiddington was the dev that did most of the work. "
Lyte then moved on to address several concerns about the changes:
[ But more wins doesn't necessairly equal more skill! ]: "We agree, [Number of Wins] doesn't directly correlate with higher skill; however, we've done some initial analyses and there's some tangible advantages to adding this parameter to the matchmaker.

We do know that adding this parameter may increase queue times for a number of players which is why we are doing a small beta test in NA first to determine the actual impact and whether we are ready to roll out the change to every territory."

[ Does this mean I can't queue with my friends who have more wins than me?? ]:

"You still can--the matchmaker will just try to find teammates and opponents that have a similar [Number of Wins] as your averages."

[ Are you sure it's been enabled? I'm still getting matched with people who have significant more games played than me. ]: "We're playing with the ramp up times; basically, for each second in the queue, how wide of a range in number of wins is the matchmaker OK with?

Right now it's pretty aggressive to make sure that players with an extreme low or high number of wins don't sit in queues for an arbitrarily long time."

[ Why did we need this? Is it going to replace hidden Elo? ]: "There's one slight nuance to your analysis: League of Legends has a level and unlock system that isn't true in Chess. As a player plays more games they get more IP which is then used to unlock Champions or Runes.

Secondly, we're not replacing Elo or the various other skill metrics in the matchmaker. We're simply adding a new parameter that the matchmaker will begin taking into account."

RiotKiddington, the Rioter that contributed the most to this project, stepped in to say:
"The system is still in beta stage, we are doing some changes over next few weeks.

There are few very hard edge cases we need to address. I will discuss it with Lyte tomorrow."
 ARAM Matchmaking
Speaking of RiotKiddington, he also popped up to deliver some news about the POSSIBLE addition of matchmaking for the ever popular ARAM/Proving Grounds mode.
"I guess I will also poke around on the engineering side to get this prioritized. The creation of ARAM originally has been a PuG during a programming contest at Riot, few Rioters just decided to form a group to make an ARAM map and then add it to the custom game. Adding ARAM to the matchmaking queue requires a little more work, but once (game) design approves the concept any platform engineer can do it within a reasonable time. Then it will go though QA, release, etc..."

    3. You know, heaven forbid the people raging stop, not like feeding trolls will only provoke them more. I know if I were to shoot for a "FIRST" comment that as soon as someone "reprimanded" me fore it that I would -TOTALLY- feel bad. Not like throwing newspaper on a fire will make it grow or anything. But seriously, the more people complain about it, the more people will feel the need to do it just to aggravate you on purpose.

  4. FINALLY!!! NO MORE UNPUNISHED QUEUE-DODGING IN ARAM!!! (sry for caps, but i am almost screaming wiht joy) Having a 5min penalty will make people thing twice before dodging from a bad champ-select, although IT IS the POINT to RANDOM something and play with it!....

    Anyway, i'm really happy ^^

    2. Well from your name, if you are playing on NA servers, you're probably one of the baddie feeders that can't cut it on the Chinese servers so you think "I'll try NA servers."

    3. lol you can't assume I'm from the Chinese servers just based off my name... I live in America mind you, and I play on NA servers. FYI, I rarely feed k.

  7. I think this is nice cuz i it may improve some players elo like me... for example always when I play ranked game i got in team with people that just made till 30 lvl and there is rly small chances to carry your team even if u are good in the most of the games.

  8. Thank god for the matchmaking fix. Starting ranked late in the season will be much better since I wont get matched with people with 500+ games that are stuck at their elo.

    1. Lol this comment makes me laugh. If you are one of the VERY VERY few that took there time in draft and blind (roughly 600-800 games), then came to ranked. I congratulation you sir, now if you are the person that jumped into ranked as soon as you have hit lvl 30 (as i did myself), i have to tell you that you are the reason those people are held back.

In season 2 i had 545 wins, as i said i jumped into ranked and probly went 50 wins with 150 loses, i found myself in the 600 elo... After many many games i have worked myself up to 1000 elo about a month and a half ago.

The main problem i found were the people with 8 wins in ranked thinking they know everything there is to know about the game, when they only own 40 champs and play 6 of them(4 adc and 2 mid). To make it worse they get first pick for having the "Highest" ELO (making them think they are more better then everyone else). If you are one of these people, like i assume you are with your comment alone, for season 3 please take it to draft and learn the game before claiming to think you know it.

  11. i dont wanna get punished for leaving the aram queue
its something i do in my downtime while i wait for my friends games to finish

its not like it takes forever for a room of 9 people to get another one

hopefully there isn't a consequence to dodging because those games only last like 20 minutes and are more casual than competitive

    1. dominion only lasts about 20 minutes as well. and you're right, it doesn't take forever to fill a room of 10 players, so why not punish the ones who pointlessly dodge such as yourself? I don't know why any player would que up any match if they didn't have the time for it or want to play it.

  13. Just because they add matchmaking doesn't mean you can't still make a custom. It does mean you can play if you can only find 5 people instead of trying to rassle up 5 more.

  14. I'm SO glad that they changed the Ranked Matchmaking. Somehow I get queued with people with >100 Ranked Wins, with myself 400+. Its cray-cray. Hopefully this will put the bad players together, where they can flail with their inability to play for eternity.

  15. Should I play ranked this season? Ive started in july and i have like 1000 games played >.> Am I ready for season 3?

  16. Riot improving the matchmaking system is the best new i´ve heard in my 3 years playing League of Legends! Being matched with unskilled players and loosing games with a 15-5-10 score (not being able to carry the game cz none of ur teammates seem to understand strategy and team cooperation) is so frustrating...
