Ward Skins Coming Soon

Posted on at 11:01 AM by Moobeat
We finally have some details on those fancy new ward skins thanks to Riot's most recent announcement. As we heard about before, some of these skins will cost you RP, while others will be available for IP. Regardless of how you buy them, they are still, unfortunately, temporary.
Continue reading for the full announcement, including pricing and duration details, as well as several red posts from Hippalus you maybe interested in.
"We’re excited to announce ward skins, a new customization option that allows you to change the appearance of your Sight and Vision Wards on the Fields of Justice. In keeping with the season, these ward skins are inspired by the haunting guise of the Shadow Isles. Activating a ward skin will transform your wards into ghosts, spooky trees, spiders, creepy stone statues, or pumpkin-headed bats with their own unique visual effects, sounds, and animations.

Here’s how they work. When you purchase a specific ward skin from the Wards tab of the League of Legends Store, it gets added to your inventory for one week. You can activate a specific ward skin to change the appearance of your wards in game. You can keep up to a year’s worth (52 weeks) of ward skins in your inventory at a time, so don’t hesitate to stock up if you have a favorite. Ward skins function the same as a regular Sight or Vision ward.

Here are the first five ward skins available to unlock:
  • Deadfall Ward – 200 IP
  • Haunting Ward – 800 IP
  • Tomb Angel Ward – 25 RP
  • Widow Ward – 75 RP
  • Bat-O-Lantern Ward – 165 RP

These particular ward skins will be releasing with the Shadow Isles patch and will be available until November 13, so buy a few extra weeks if you want to frighten friends and foes alike all year round."

Of course the biggest critique of this new content is about the duration and why we can't just have a permanent unlock, to which Hippalus replied:
"The goal here is not to have ghosts and bats popping up all over Summoner's Rift all year round. It is a Harrowing/Shadow Isles promotion to add a new element to the event and help us understand how players like and use ward skins."
Furthermore, he expanded on that by adding in:
"If players like the concept of ward skins, the longer term plan would likely be to have permanent ward skins year round plus lower cost rentals for the holidays. This is an experiment with a new type of content and it doesn't make sense to offer permanent non-holiday ward skins until we see if players use and enjoy it."

    1. Riot releases these great new skins, and maps and a great new long awaited champ and then they fish out this crap about 1 week ward skins? no... no... boycotting, i'd do it if it was IP maybe but RP for one week... GTFO

      Delete
    2. There are rp and ip ones. Most seasonal stuff is... Seasonal. Not sure why that would make you boycott.

      Delete
    3. Boycotting makes sense because they are essentially trying to make you use your left over RP instead of saving it. Aka making you buy more RP. Personally i don't find it that bad, they DO have them for IP as well. I actually like these though and i hope when they release permanent ones these are among them and don't simply get trashed after November.

    4. What`s the point ? Buy it if you want. Or don`t. It`s a simple decision of an average customer, not a 'boycott' (lol).

    7. They shouldnt be temporary. If thats the case why arent the character skins temporary? You can run around as Santa Gragas all year round. If you bought them then you should be able to keep them all year round. Also if this is the case... do we get them next year or do we have to buy them again? That's another good question to be asking...

    8. It isn't releasing great new content, its teasing with great new content. Rate down for the temporary. Boycott? excessive, but I myself won't be purchasing a temporary item.

    9. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Stop whinging like children telling others to boycott if you don't like it.

While I may not like the concept of temporary, I have to respect that this is what they've decided for now, until further decisions are made. They've at least given the option of ward skins through IP.

Furthermore, you should've saved up IP for october anyway, they always do something which at least requires some IP, so that's no excuse either.

Bottom line: Don't be such whingers

    3. its 25 RP not IP, definitely not worth it

    4. To be honest, no one wants summoner rift littered with Halloween wards all year. Having this temporary is a great idea.

    5. So they shouldn't sell it ... that's all

    6. I'd pay 1300 rp for unlocking them permanently...

  5. not cool at all, i would want permanent version

    ReplyDelete
  6. ewwwww , they should just make it like half a full price skin in rp, or like 3150 ip for 1.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nope, lost all interest in it. I'm keeping the regular wards

    ReplyDelete
  8. Meh the tree is my favorite anyways and at 200 IP that's my FWOTD So I am not too terribly upset about that one.... the others are a bit ridiculous. Maybe we will see more people warding in solo Q to get their money's worth. *keeping hope alive*

    THEIR HALLOWEEN SKINS.

    1. They should be permanent if you have to pay for them. They could just give us free skin during halloween for free if they have to be temporary. ;) I would spend 6300 IP or 975 RP for those ward skins. This time they were not smart enough.

    3. "I would spend 6300 IP or 975 RP for those ward skins."

I do agree with you their. But I personally dont mind that they cost pennies for a week. its not like their a major vanity item. Majority of the people complaining probably dont even buy wards that often. Being a support player i will use the years worth i buy, and i shall admire them.

    4. Also, Mr anonymous, i dont really care that much about my grammar, go elsewere for your daily grammar "policery"

  10. If they where permanent I would buy them, but for only one week I will pass, I'm not too fond on purchase temporary cosmetics.

  11. Two new posts about it. :)

I hope HARROWING ones are weekly, but the future ones will be more expansive, but all lol long.

  12. How dare they try to make money off of the free game they put out that you can play without ever having to pay a dime! Entitled.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lmao, you guys are some poor bastards. Not to mention that the cheapest one is only 200 IP for a full week. I can get that in one game with my win of the day.

    2. That's what I was thinking. It's practically 1 or 2 IP wins, for a weeks worth of wards. I'm so confused as to why everyone's crying lol.

  17. 250ip is nothing I'd buy it! Cool to change up the look of wards, even if temporarily, and it helps them create an ip sink that I'm sure they need.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They could just make it a lot pricier and permanent though.

      Delete
    2. If it was permanent and pricier, you'd all whine about the price and you know it.

      Delete
  18. i will buy just the ips one.. anyways it would be much better if you could unlock for ever but only use them for harrowing..

    ReplyDelete
  19. XD As much i jump on the "damn you Riot!" wagan, i agree with the comment above^. Shuts down that side of my brain everytime. "Oh yeah, i don't HAVE to spend my money on this game" *goes and buys more RP*

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nine out of ten LoL fans thought this was a neat, little idea... then promptly wondered what a Ward was.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Make it

    975 RP / 10.000 IP

    each ...

    BUT PERMA!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, then you'd complain about the price. Do you realize just how much 10K IP is? If it was permament, it would have to be RP only. Just like a skin.

      Delete
  22. This is ridiculous. Im definitely not buying it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Meh, just farm Dominion games. You get more ip faster. I think it's not that big of a deal, we get to spend ip on something else for a change and this will encourage warding a little more for lower tiered players.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Championship Icon is availiable

    ReplyDelete
  25. For those of us that own all the champions we want and have enough full rune pages for our amateur League of Legends career, this is a great idea. And even if you don't spend money on this game and don't have all those rune pages and champions, you can get a week long rental of 200 IP skin for one First Win of the Day. or with 4 wins you get the 800 IP. That's 4 out of 7 days you have to play one game to get these. Not a big deal at all. I'll be getting these every week. For free.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Make them last a year and have some promo prices, like 350 RP or something. Otherwise it's not worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "not to have ghosts and bats popping up... all year round"

They already have ghosts (Haunting Nocturne) and numerous seasonal/holiday skins popping up all year round. Festive Maokai (a Christmas tree) was seen numerous times at the recent World Championships and it's not currently Christmas time.

Obviously they're just looking for a new way to make more money (akin to WoW's $15/month subscription cost on top of the money people already spend on buying new champions / skins).

    ReplyDelete
  28. if they only last 1 week i would still buy them for ip not rp. the ip cost is so low so can make that up fast and it would be good for people who have played soo long that they already have every champion they want and have a lot of extra ip. :D

    ReplyDelete
  29. So much whining around here, and I don`t really see why. The game remains 100% free, so what`s the point of these all accusations ? You don`t have to spend your IP/RP on the wards if you think one week is too short.

BTW, the tomb angel skin looks actually funny and it costs whooping 15 cents. And you can have a deadfall one just for one 1st win of the day. Small reward, small price - looks fair to me.

  30. So.. im wasting real money or ip for skins to wards that most of the time will be shown only for my teammates and the common site to place them is in the bushes.. so they cant apreciate them completely?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Except for the fact that their main income has and will always be skins. Making a new feature that players have been asking for rentable for ridiculous amounts of money is not okay.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah, i dont want halloween wards all the year. Next step riot should take is to make that people cant use seasonal skins when isnt the right time. So i'm using my striker ez on 2014. /sarcasm

    NICE MOVE, RIOT!

  33. everybody is crying about the new stuff is too expensive and other things, people forget that THIS GAME IS COMPLETLY PLAYABLE FOR FREE!!!! If u want extra stuff go pay for it, this is how it works.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do it atleast for a full month RIOT... Every year, 1 month before the Season ends and Halloween comes along, having these unlocked every year for the ones who already paid previous year would be awsome. But this, no.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Damn, 25 rp IS ridiculous!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ward skins rental. Revolting.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just like irl ppl buy decorations for the holidays , but don't keep them up all year long. I don't mind buying the ones for ip since I have a ton of ip an u can always get some more, but also the rp ones are cheap, just 25, what else you gonna do with 25 rp XD

But yes that ghosty ward will be mine :O

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, a totally free game. Good luck having champions _and_ runes upon arriving at level 30 without buying RP.

DotA2 is more f2p than League is.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have to say this is a bad one riot
    bad one

One of the things i loved about LoL was taht there was no of this shitty "buy for a week" stuff as there are in every other thing :/

    ReplyDelete
  40. If only they were not temporary. I would have rather buy a pricey permanent skin for wards than the current system.

    ReplyDelete
  41. what are you talking about? i hit lvl 30 and had 2 full rune pages and 30+ champs.

    ReplyDelete
  42. u wont see them in the new TT :'(

What if I DON'T give 2 bodily functions about whatever the Christmas wards are gonna look like???

    T.T

  46. Not to mention you cant buy Runes with RP, only with IP.

Also, unless you are retarded and bought tier 1 and/or tier 2 runes, by the time you hit lvl 30 you should have enough money for Standard AP, Standard AD and Jungle Rune Pages (buying an extra one, also with IP).

You will also have spare IP to buy a few champions most likely some 6k ones too.

Also, Riot made it so low level players earn more IP, so its even easier to rack up on IP from lvl 1 to 30.

Maybe Im lucky or something, but if I remember correctly when I reached lvl 30 in my first account I had bought around 18 champions and 3 full rune pages all with IP.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This does seem like a bit of a stretch, however Riot is still staying true and at the very least is not selling power.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Riot needs to make these permanent!

    ReplyDelete
  49. You can stack buy them. You could get 53 copies of the 200 ip one for 10k ip and have it for a year. By that time they will probably have newer better permanent ward skins.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would pay more for permanent unlock.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What's wrong about being a dota lover? I'm a dota lover and lol fan but that doesn't make you any better than me. You fanboys show your nature way too much. You should be the one getting the hell out of a conversation like this. Jeez.

    ReplyDelete
  52. lol chumps most pro players in leagues didnt even buy RP to unlock champs or pages they used them to buy skins.
