Piltover Story Update -  The Medarda Heirloom & Progress Day

The Piltover story page has been updated with a new Progress Day story and The Medarda Heirloom, a new regional map hooked to the Piltover story!
Be sure to check out our [PILTOVER STORY PAGE] coverage for these new stories and more! We'll continue to update that page as more content becomes available.

When asked if we'll ever see a singular large map for all over Runeterra, Bioluminescence noted:
"Quote:
If you don't mind me asking, do you know if we're we ever going to get an Updated map of Runeterra?
Unlikely that there'll be just a plain ol', all in one, just-the-facts-ma'am, style world map in the near future.
But if players use the more cultural artifact style maps, like the Medarda Heirloom, to piece together information - I can't stop them."
As for any news on a new story for other champions, Jaredan Permalink
"I can't give an ETA, sorry, but Shaco is on the list of those due some love. The story you mention is just a pitch that I know one of the writers is looking to seek his teeth into, but he has a bunch of stuff on his plate.
I know when your favorite Champ hasn't received the attention he or she deserves it can be frustrating, but, as you can see from Universe, Piltover, and from what is to come, various teams are working on content to fill the gaps we know exist.
We're all looking forward to when we have in place the content we want for all our Champions."

Ask Riot: Ultimate skins, working at Riot, & new musical universes

Ask Riot is back  and this week's edition answers questions on Pulsfire Ezreal, getting into the business, and more!
"Welcome to Ask Riot!
This week, let’s do Ultimate skins, music composition, and getting hired at Riot.
Do you plan to rework Pulsefire Ezreal? It seems pretty out of date for an Ultimate skin, especially with the emergence of Elementalist Lux.

Hi there! This question comes up a lot. Like, literally, new hires at Riot ask me this question when they find out I work on Personalization.
We talk about skin reworks a lot on the team. We do them occasionally, but in general, we prefer to keep moving forward, creating new high quality skin experiences for players. The team is constantly challenging itself to create skins that are more resonant or more impactful, and as a result, we keep raising the quality bar for ourselves. That’s one of the best parts of the job, getting to challenge yourself to do even better next time. The main downside is that this leaves some of our earlier work feeling lower value, even though, at the time, it was the highest value product we’d made. Case in point being Pulsefire Ezreal.
I just took a look at what Moobeat wrote about PFE on Surrender@20 when we released the skin (true story, the current Featured Content in the sidebar is an image of Elementalist Lux with her 10 gloriously high quality forms). 🙂 The article, written on June 13, 2012, starts out with “Pulsefire Ezreal has been officially announced and, boy howdy, did Riot out do themselves.” And yeah, at the time, we had. But now you put these two skins side by side and PFE just does not hold up.
So, while we’re not ready to commit to anything, I think the chances of a PFE rework are pretty high. To set proper expectations, we aren’t trying to get Pulsefire Ezreal to the same quality level as DJ Sona or Elementalist Lux. To do that, we’d have to start from scratch, and there are too many other champions and players of those champions we’d like to make this type of experience for instead of investing in a brand new PFE. That said, there’s a lot we can do to increase the quality of this skin, and those are the things we’ll be taking a look at. Stay tuned!

How can I work at Riot Games? What do you look for in candidates?

I’ll answer the second question first—what we’re looking for depends on the role, but the points on the Riot manifesto are very deliberately built into our candidate assessments. Beyond that, the job description itself is a great place to understand what exactly we’re looking for, although the specific demands of a job are going to change slightly, even as we hire for it. If you get to a phone interview, take advantage of the opportunity to get crystal-clear on what the team is looking for.
As for the first question—there aren’t a lot of hard-and-fast rules about where our candidates come from, or what kind of path will most easily lead to a job at Riot. It’s going to depend on the team. The best general advice I can give is to identify what specific kind of work you’d like to be doing, and then start gathering experience in that craft as soon as possible. The hard part is picking it—once you know what you want to do for Riot, it’s a fairly straightforward process to look up where you can gather that specific experience and then go for it. You can also creep on Rioters that are currently doing the job you’re interested in, and study their career paths, which might be more varied than you think.
I also give this advice because entry-level roles (and internships) are extremely competitive; we’re fortunate to get a lot of great applications at that level. Just a couple years of relevant experience elsewhere will skip you ahead of that entry-level crush.
I’d also like to give a shoutout to the great community in our LinkedIn careers group; they’re super helpful with questions and conversations around this

The Lux login theme music is amazing. How long does it take to make something like this, and how many people work on it?

I wrote and produced the music for Elementalist Lux, but we had a lot of help in the recording sessions: 56 musicians and singers who graced us with their performances, a conductor, a recording engineer, a copyist (the person who creates parts for the musicians), and a contractor (the person who hires the musicians and all the personnel for the session on our behalf). Outside of that, I did the orchestrations, produced, mixed, and mastered the music. That’s a lot of hats to wear, but I like it in the sense that I’m able to shape the musical identity of a project from start to finish.
The turnaround time for something like this is 2-4 weeks, depending on the scope of the project (number of assets required to be supported by music, visibility of the project, logistics, creative back-and-forth, etc.). The thing that takes us the most time is finding new themes and musical universes. We strive to come up with something different and fitting for each new champ/skin. There are a lot of different details to keep in mind (lore, gameplay, emotional arc, the sound of League’s music at large, etc.).
That initial concepting phase is so deep and translates into so many musical ideas that we could end up writing a lot of music for the champion/skin in question. Once we have our theme and general music direction good to go, the actual writing/producing itself isn’t so time-consuming.
On behalf of the team, thank you for your kind words! We work very hard to make good music. It’s not always easy, but rest assured we try 🙂

It’s cool.

Ok.

Have a question? Head over to Ask Riot and sign into your League account. Check out the Dos and Don’ts, then ask away.
We promise to read every question, but we can’t guarantee they’ll all get answers. Some questions may already be answered elsewhere, and some won’t be right for Ask Riot. This isn’t the best place to announce new features, for example, and we might skip conversations on issues we’ve talked about in depth before (though we can clarify individual points).
We are listening, though, so keep asking. We’ll make sure your questions are heard by the Rioters working on the stuff you’re curious about."

RGMQ - One for All Friday & Updated Schedule

One for All returns this weekend in the Rotating Game Mode Queue!. The RGMQ schedule has been updated to add on a second week of Legend of the Poro King (including the upcoming 6.24 changes) in late December.
"From the sand-strewn battlefield of Ascension to the frenetic manatee magic of Ultra Rapid Fire, rotating game modes provide unique spins on the classic League formula. It’s time to kick things off with the next game mode in the rotation: One for All is now live!
For a refresher on the mode, let’s go over the basics:
Once you get into champ select, you and your team will vote for the champion you’ll all play before jumping into the game for inevitable chaos. Whether you’re chaining an endless string of Gangplank barrels, assembling a Tahm Kench matryoshka, or covering the map with Illaoi tentacles lashing every choke point, One For All is basically five times crazier than when you’re the only one playing your champion. Or at the very least, there’s five times the lasers.
As in any rotating queue game mode, we’ve specially tuned Champion Mastery so you can earn points in the mode. You’ll also be able to earn keys for your wins and loot chests for your (or your premade’s) S-, S, and S+ games.
One for All is now available and lasts through the evening on Monday (we’ll shut it down very early Tuesday morning--usually between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM).
We’ll be trying out different things with the rotating game mode queue over the next few months such as, changing the mode cadence or what modes are available. We’re looking for your feedback as we go, so let us know. GLHF!

Meddler Grab Bag - Nidalee PBE buffs, Galio & Warwick, and more

Next up we have Meddler discussing Galio & Warwick, Nidalee PBE buffs, and more!

On the topic of rune related work, Meddler reiterated they would be working on them in 2017:
"We're planning to do some work on runes sometime next year - there are a number of things about them we think we could improve. It's also a system with a lot of history to it, much of which is outside of my area of expertise and that of most Rioters. That's why it's not a topic that gets responded to much."
When asked about the large scope champion updates planned for Galio and Warwick, Meddler noted both would be released in 2017 and Warwick would be here before the next new champion:
"Both will be next year, both their actual releases and any teasers/promo stuff for them. Warwick's the next large scale update that will come out and will be out before the next new champion."
When asked if Warwick would be in patch 7.1, Meddler noted:
"Quote:
no warwick for next patch? :(
No."
Meddler continued:
"Quote:
So I'm confused. WW will be out before or after Camille? Please be more clear when you already have a "new champion" coming down the pipe.
Camille comes out in December (hence she's on the PBE right now).
Warwick will come out after Camille.
Other major updates and new champions will come out after Warwick."
As for Urgot's eventual champion update, Meddler noted:
"Quote:
status on Urgot?
Monstrous.
Also a likely candidate for an update next year (definitely not before Galio or Warwick at least though). "
Meddler also commented on the base AD buff for Nidalee in the 12/1 PBEPermalink
"We'd originally been planning on buffing Nid in patch 7.1. We came to the conclusion a couple of days ago though that it wasn't appropriate to wait that long after watching her performance in 6.23. Since we were right at the end of the patch development cycle we didn't have time to do anything but a very simple buff. A base AD increase seemed like a good approach as a result, given it's fairly predictable and adds power to Nid regardless of build or position (something we do want to do).
I think it's pretty likely we also look at Nid in 7.1 anyway. We do think it's likely her performance will improve a bit as players optimize her more for the new jungle (she's got more jungling nuances than most). She might still be too weak even with this base stat buff though."
As for if there were any plans to look at Lissandra's passive still, Meddler noted:
"No immediate plans for it. It's an opportunity to do better, but not a priority relative to other higher value work."

Quick Hits -  PROJECT Hoodie Update, 50% off LoL Hoodie & more

[Quick hits is our own mini news collection inside a red post collection, often including shorter or easy to digest stories and repeat information you may have missed in other posts! ]

"PROJECT HOODIE SHIPPING UPDATE 2
We wanted to update everyone on the status of the PROJECT Hoodie. All of the hoodie for Europe were received in the warehouse earlier this week and shipped out. You should have received a shipping notification in EU and your hoodies are on the way. The hoodies for all of North America are checking into the warehouse in the morning and will begin shipping immediately, we estimate that by Wednesday or Thursday they will all have also shipped (they can get about 2000 per day out the door starting tomorrow). Thank you again for your patience and we will post a final update when NA has completed shipping."

  • When asked if the Extra Bonus RP (increase to the extra bonus RP you get when purchsing RP) would return sometime this year, WizardCrab explained:
"We've kind of phased out Extra Bonus RP for the most part. But it was never that intentional or explicit.
Essentially all of our data pointed to EBRP having low participation and low appreciation relative to other discount methods we offer. So when the time comes to design promotions that our players will interact with and enjoy, the right call for the best offering never seems to be EBRP. We'd rather give you "Your Shop" promos, Crafting promos, or other more interesting/effective offers.
Not sure if I explained that well but hopefully it makes sense."

  • While light on specifics, WizardCrab also tweeted while we would not have a personalized Snowdown shop this year but will have "have other cool stuff though".
