IWillDominate, of team Dignitas, Banned and Suspended from Champ. Series events for One Year

Posted on at 1:57 PM by Moobeat
IWillDominate, the current jungler for team Dignitas, has had all of his accounts banned AND is ineligible to compete in any S3 Championship Series event for one year as a result of toxic behavior. These punishments, effective immediately, come despite several previous Tribunal bans and official warnings.
If I'm not mistaken, this marks the first time a player from one of the top teams in the world has invoked such a severe punishment and essentially ended their own career as a result of overwhelmingly negative behavior. Riot seems to be making an example out of him, proving that even pro players are not exempt from the Summoner's Code.

Continue reading for the full ruling, including RedBeard's remarks on the situation and a message from IWillDominate himself.

Before we get to the official ruling, here is what Redbeard, the VP of eSports, had to say about the situation and the grave news for Team Dignitas.
"Hi Summoners,

Today I’ve got some tough news to share with you. We take sportsmanship and player behavior very seriously, and we fundamentally believe that pro players should not be exempt from scrutiny over their behavior. In fact, we believe pros have an additional opportunity to act as positive role models for the entire community.

The decision to impact someone’s career is not one we make lightly, which is why this is tough news to deliver. Unfortunately, our Tribunal recently was forced to permanently ban a pro player as a response to his persistent toxic behavior, and after closely reviewing the individual’s case and history, the Riot eSports team has issued a ruling that follows this post.

We fully understand that there are other pro players who behave poorly from time to time, and we do not condone any unsportsmanlike behavior. It’s important to note how severe and consistent the behavior of this particular individual was, as is outlined in the ruling. No other professional players in NA approach this individual’s harassment score – that said, we monitor all pro player behavior actively and we will continue to make that clear to all pro teams, and will take necessary action should any other players demonstrate unacceptable behavior in the future.

Promoting good sportsmanship and improving player behavior is a mission that’s extremely important to Riot, and this ruling is a reflection of our commitment."

... and here is the complete ruling:

"League of Legends Competition Ruling

Player: Christian Rivera / IWillDominate
Date of Ruling: 12.03.12
Subject: Suspension; Violations of Summoner’s Code

Facts:
Recently, IWillDominate was brought before the Tribunal for consideration of a permanent ban. The majority of players voted to punish and today the Riot player behavior team has approved the ban after review of the case.

IWillDominate has been in Tribunal nine times and punished eight times, including the most recent permanent ban. He has a persistent record of in-game harassment, verbal abuse, offensive language and negative attitude.

Despite the punishments and official warnings, his harassment score has risen more than 30% from early August to the present date, placing him at the top of the list of North American pro players and among the worst 0.7% of all North American players.

There also have been repeated incidents of similar behavior outside the game.

Relevant Rules:
The Summoner's Code establishes the standards of behavior for all League of Legends players.

Analysis:
IWillDominate has consistently engaged in behavior which violates the letter and spirit of the Summoner’s Code.

His persistent tendency to engage in verbal abuse and insults, his lack of cordial demeanor, and his treatment of less-skilled players is unacceptable for any player, especially a high-profile professional player who has a regular opportunity to lead the community by example.

Ruling:
IWillDominate has violated the letter and spirit of the Summoner’s Code in a systematic fashion.

Penalties:
IWillDominate is ineligible to play in the League of Legends Championship Series for a period of one year. This suspension shall commence immediately.

In addition, all other existing known accounts used by IWillDominate are permanently banned."
IWillDominate has responded to his punishments over on reddit, saying:
"Today i was informed by riot that I will be suspended for 1 year of the Season 3 Championship Series. Although the ruling is extremely tough, I agree with riot that player sportsmanship is a serious matter and i want to apologize to anyone that i've offended in game and my fans. I fully understand that pro players are viewed as role models and should act accordingly. I'd like to thank my teammates and the whole Dignitas organization for the amazing year that i have spent with them and wish the team the best of luck going into season 3. Personally I will not let this end my dreams of being a professional league of legends player. During my suspension I intend to keep my mechanics in top form and remain a competitive jungler. After my suspension i hope to rejoin the championship series and once again compete at the highest level. League of Legends is my life, and i will do everything in my power to play as long as possible."

  9. Going to keep up on his mechanics? So...he's going to play on the PBE or something? Or is he saying he's just going to watch a ton of streams? Either way, nice to see that even top players are subject to this sort of thing.

Maybe they should start banning the people who have been caught cheating....

This is my problem. He shouldnt be allowed back in the game. But he'll just make a smurf account, only tell his scrim buddies, and have them invite him. He'll still be able to practice and play, without any REAL repercussions, aside from not being able to compete in tourneys. You can argue that its his life, but no other job would give you 9 chances to not be a douche to other people. As an icon to players wanting to be pro, there should be a 0 tolerance policy on this type of behavior. NINE TIMES? Comon.

  12. its his problem! why did he talkshit that much then? he just pay for what he did thats it.

  14. Well there's really no way they could stop him, not sure if they're able to IP ban, but if they are he can change it without much difficulty. The punishment is still nasty though, he loses all the money he spent on the game, all his skins, runes, levels, wins, elo and so on. I wouldn't like to lose all of my shit.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Levels/wins/elo doesnt matter when youre a top tier player that can carry the other 4 people on your team. You can get those back. Skins/runes sure, but how much cash do you think he put into his account? Who knows.

There are ways. MAC address bans are harder to get around, monitoring IPs that hes logged in from is a good way to tell if another connection has been made and ban the accounts appropriately.

I just dont feel he should be allowed anywhere AROUND the community at this point. NINE TIMES. NINE. He shouldve gotten ONE warning and the next a ban. It doesnt even sound like hes sorry - the apology was shit and hes already talking about 'keeping his mechanics in top form'.

  16. Im very sad about this really. Dominate was liking ass of Riot in his reddit post, if i were him i would have quited whole game. No company should treat anyone like that.

      Delete
  17. That's pretty harsh - chances are if you play League you've gotten warned at least once for inappropriate behavior.

Let's face it, since this guy's life is totally consumed with the game, its hard for him to not get frustrated and vent at people sometimes. That being said, I think this punishment was harsh but appropriate, but I see no reason to prevent him from ever doing anything related to League ever again.

  20. Point of interest, I have never been warned by the tribunal, nor has any one of the dozens of other league players I know. The VAST majority of players have never gone before the tribunal, and even the cases that do make it, a large portion are pardoned.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Fire. lots of it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Youd be wrong.

I have been playing since release xin (actually a bit before that), and have NEVER gotten a warning or a ban. Never been to the tribunal and have earned honorable opponent badge like 4 times over.

I have been known to rage in game too. I type up a storm. But at the end of the day, Im not a douchebag. I try and help people improve and my behavior, whereas, not perfect, is nowhere near this level. NINE TIMES. I dont think I should have to repeat it, but I will. NINE. TIMES. The top .7% of THE WORST PLAYERS IN LOL. That sys something - THATS the reason they should keep him out of the game. He hasnt learned his lesson, hes not upset. This full year ban they should hold it a lot stronger than just getting rid of his main and a few of his smurfs they know about. They should keep him OUT of the game for that year and let him come back fresh, after, hopefully, learning his lesson about treating others.

  25. TBH i think this is a case at how the tribunal doesn't work. If we are going to start considering players as professionals, then in turn the company must re-organize its system of punishment. E-sports is currently on the rise, and the bigger it gets, the more money we will see in tournaments. I am in full support of e-sports making it big, because like most who would ever read this, I am a gamer. But e-sports will have many more issues if things are not changed immediately. Lets look at professional Football for instance. Last time I checked, getting angry and foul language is common with COACHES, let alone players. Sure you can't rage at a ref, but between players there is jawing everywhere. As far as "Toxic" harassment, I'm quite sure nothing a gamer could type would be as intimidating as what a 300lb linebacker could say on the field. So does that linebacker get thrown out for a year? Last time i checked the worst things to happen that would be frequently punishable are a suspension for something like the saints tried, or unsafe hits leading with your helmet. Considering its just a FINE for causing serious injury in the most watched sport in The US, I find it hard to believe a company leading the way in E-sports would let a community of adults/teens/men/women/and of course your friendly neighborhood troll, even be significant in deciding any one part of anyone's "career." Now getting an account banned is one thing, but such an over-reaction like this seems a little to "Toxic" in itself. To me, these kind of reactions and posts are much more toxic to the community then Iwilldominate's actions. I just see a major overstepping in boundaries by a company wanting to grow e-sports. NFL wouldn't kick out a player for jawing/anger in practice(solo que, skrims etc). Some people are just jerks, look at the QB of of Chicago. If Riot/E-sports wants to be professional, they should take a look at how current money making regimes are handling things. Now I am going by what I am thinking he is banned for, (Language/insults/harassment etc). If there is something in the background happening like throwing games at tourney's to win money(fixed fights), dog fights in his garage/murdering people/drug abuse, then of course like any normal being with a since of the current Laws in the country of the US, I am behind the ban all the way.

  29. All the people I know personally and myself, we all have never gotten a warning or ban. There are actually alot of people like that. And I myself am pretty serious about games and especially don't like people talking bad about the Support Role, but if you actually try, then it isn't difficult to at least stay so calm that you will not get banned, even if you were to get into the Tribunal. That is the least you should be able to do.

And IWillDominate obviously didn't try, after so many bans. I cannot find any excuse for that, since there isn't. He knew exactly what he was doing wrong and he kept on doing it the same, even worse in the end. I don't know if he thought himself safe as a pro player, but that is not important, because obviously what matters in the end is that he didn't improve even a tiny bit. Hence, he didn't care.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Of course, because having a bunch of kiddos (and not so kiddos) complaining in almost every game about shitty things is so manly.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I highly disagree.

I have never had a warning..but I have used the tribunal. The only tribunal cases I have gotten wrong have been pardons. Care to guess what percentage of the cases I pardoned were pardoned by the majority of the community too? The answer is 0%.

    No word of a lie.

  33. Maybe you should go play Dota 2. We don't need more trolls playing League of Legends. We already have a bunch to deal with (like IWillDominate)

  34. I respect Riot for what they are trying to do. They are trying to uphold a higher standard of gaming that real sports have long since given up trying to do. The standard is set, be a sportsman. Go watch cricket, the guys jerk each other around, but a South African player got warned for swearing someone on the pitch. It's unsportsmanlike, it's disgusting behavior. Riot has to take a firm stance here, eSports is a whole new genre and they've been given the opportunity to hold the banner high and say this is what it means to be a Professional. Riot couldn't have done this lightly, a year ban, that's this kids career, it had to be a tough decision.

And what if we do compare it to real sports? Insulting and flaming in a game is more than just swearing on the field, its more like swinging a punch. Soccer has severe penalties for players that get physical with their aggression, why can't eSports have severe repercussions when players get "physical with their aggression". One year ban is tough, but he should of caught a wake up a long time ago, what the hell Dignatas, you let this guy on your team?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that Riot should start to ban IP, not only Summoner's Name. That should give a LOT of power and respect to banning.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Same thing happens in any sport, if a player is being a complete douche then they get suspended and even banned. Glad LoL doesnt exclude itself from this, and to be honest if dota is going to be where all the ragy hormonal kids go then let it be

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't really agree with what you're saying. Taking your example in football, yeah, the players get mad, they insult each other and what not. They get penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior. But year-long bans don't happen because there's millions of dollars involved. In a professional League of Legends career, there might be thousands of dollars on the line, but they're not signing multimillion dollar contracts.
That being said, he was put up on the Tribunal nine times. NINE times. Do you have any idea how much effort it takes to get on the Tribunal NINE times? And if I read it correctly, he was warned seven times then banned the eighth time, having been pardoned once.
I don't care who you are, whether you're a big shot football player or an E-sports professional, if you get warned seven times and don't improve whatever is wrong, you really do deserve to get whatever punishment comes at you. How about this, if you're a "professional", why not act like one?

Odds are this person makes twice as much as you and probably enjoys his job twice as much as you. League is his life, its his source of income and if i was given the opportunity to play this game for a living, I would take it in a heartbeat. You people who keep quoting him, read this. Theres no way I would risk the reputation of my sports team just because of my members couldnt STFU and not be a douche. He'd have been cut after the first 2 warnings and I wouldve found a player that was just as good, and WASNT gonna make our team look like shit.

  52. Let's just hope that he'll learn some manners during this year... If he does change his behaviour he should be welcomed to the league. So Christian... being a role model and pro player and all... Don't dissapoint us again... Please:P

    ReplyDelete
  53. They changed the tribunal to not reward IP which should have reduced toxic players. Besides, Riot probably went through his personally to be sure. 9 times ? And the guy confessed. His behavior is well known in and out of game. He's obviously toxic

    ReplyDelete
  54. Money shouldn't be a deciding factor. Nor should language. I know the terms of LoL, so in regards to the warnings, if you are warned that much, punishment should obviously be the outcome. BUT as things grow, thing like this are going to happen where changes need to be made. Whether you find professional gaming silly, or not a legit form of a career, IT is indeed possible. Banning/ pausing a career, regardless of what career, for something like language during practices/scrims/solo-Que in a country that has free speech is ridiculous. He is a jerk, so what. I don't know the guy, but if he was able to stick with 4 other people on a team for so long, he cant be THAT bad of a guy. So a career gets stopped over personal opinions of language? That is absurd. Since i play LoL, I know the issues regarding language that plague the tribunal. But if I was an Investor, whether a team owner or looking to put money into MLG, etc, and I read that one of the leading E-sport community driven games halted a career over language, I would instantly be taking back my investment. Why would I invest in anything, where people are punished for such common daily used language, whether in jest or frustration. It's trivial and childish to get "mad" enough to punish someone over something so meaningless. Due to suicidal low self esteem children, online "bullying" has become a politically correct first world problem. So where do we draw the line? Do we ban people over bad words, and in turn possibly ruin careers over that? Or do we change. Just like I said, its an issue where i think Tribunal doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  55. So you say money shouldn't be a deciding factor, then write a paragraph about why money is the deciding factor. People play LoL for fun, not to get raged at and made to feel like crap because they are having an off game. Players of this game often seem to forget that they are playing with and against other human beings, with emotions and a real life. There is absolutely NO REASON why someone should be verbally abused for trying to play a casual game; that is why the summoner's code exists and is necessary - because people cant treat others with the most basic decency. If you don't think online bullying affects people, both children and adults, go do some research. Whether or not their responses to bullying are immature, they are a reality. Nobody should be made to feel like that over a video game, and if pro players, or any players, have such little self control that they cannot follow the code, they should not be allowed to participate in the game. Money is irrelevant regarding LoL and the summoner's code. Because no amount of money should make it okay for people to harm each other in any context.

  58. I am really happy to see this. Not only he was a really negative person but also this is a great example to others. Really hope that other pro players will finally stop swearing at everybody and won't be as racist as they are now.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Do you really think everyone playing the game has gotten a warning for inappropiate behaviour? You must be one of them belonging to the players ruining the game for so many others.

This is the main problem, you people thinking that is a normal thing to happen. You are the problem.

That said, I don't agree with a permanent ban after one warning, the problem is, he had a warning, he was judged 9 times, condemned eight, where the fudge are the other temp bans? RIOT has been so lenient with this guy until now because he was a pro, it is a good thing they are changing it, but this just shows how bad it was before.

    ReplyDelete
  60. He is going to make a new account and play in the same server with all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  61. While I agree that players should not rage so repeatedly, I think the fact that there are so many trolls who destroy the fun of the game needed to weeded out before such bans are effected. Many a time, players downright refuse to communicate with the team. In such cases, it really ruins the game for one team and is difficult for the tribunal to judge such a case. Same goes with players who feed once or twice or join with 3 other trolls in their team. A lot of rage cases may just be frustration at these imbeciles.

Most pro players spend at least 500$ on their account, for rune pages, champs, skins. Maximum I think was 2500$.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh yeah, how dares Riot discourage people from trolling and insulting others!

At least I can tell that you were already banned from League. How's it, being so unwanted by a game's makers that they do not even take the chance to get into your wallet?

    ReplyDelete
  68. He loses out a ton of money - if he streams Riot will simply ban his new smurf, and he can't attend any events to make revenue. His only income is Dig's sponsorship, but I am not sure a company would pay a player who's on a year long hiatus.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Almost three years down the road, 2000+ games played on various accounts, not a single warning from Riot or The Tribunal.

Time spent on an activity is a poor excuse for bad manners - if I had worked in two consecutive shifts, would I be allowed to call everyone who I come across names? Nope, I would be beaten up/sued, and I would have to pay a fine.

Life is harsh, Riot is not - it took them nine bans to get him out of the game for 1 year.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I disagree. This just proves how the Code isn't for everyone. I mean, NINE TIMES in the Tribunal and they ban him for a year?! How many people are PERMA-banned each and every day by a lot less? He's a pro (or was one), you'd think the rules should apply to him heavier, not lighter like this case showed. But that could also be called unfair, ok, so at least give the pros the same treatment the plebe gets (I doubt the commoners get nine chances before a one-year ban).

    ReplyDelete
  84. @FMLuder: You sound butt-hurt, looks like IWillDominate wasn't the only one banned from the game for being a jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The problem with your example is that professional football players don't routinely wander around to neighborhood football games monitored and officiated by the league, join a pickup game, and then behave exactly the same way to 'civilian' players as they do to their professional colleagues, completely with trash talking, swearing, physicality, ass-patting, etc.

The only example of them interacting with the fanbase at all on an athletic level is when they do Play60 promotions and play with kids or other charity situations, and you'd better believe they are on their absolute best behavior during those situations.

The former example is effectively what he was doing - going to amateur hour and behaving like he was. Not to mention, an NFL player caught promoting the abuse of a restricted or illegal substance are subject to a pretty serious battery of fines and penalties, up to and including suspension. If I'm honest, I don't know the Code well enough to know if Riot explicitly remarks on that kind of thing, but I know it includes sections intentionally designed to be vague so that they also get the final say on what exactly is illicit behavior.

  92. Actualy his accounts have already been perma banned. Riot not only did remove his acounts but ALSO did FORBID him to participate in ANY championship as a PERSON ! No matter what account he uses.
This is far more severe than a normal player ban.

  93. chill out. He said "CHANCES ARE" and is statistically rigth, i never got any either and play since january 2010.
Riot not only did remove his acounts but ALSO did FORBID him to participate in ANY championship as a PERSON ! No matter what account he uses. This is far more severe than a normal player ban as is onw accounts have ALREADY been permabanned one by one.

  94. Ban the mac address and he just get a new network card ou computer, and he can bypass his IP with ease, he can play the game as anyone can after getting his acounts banned.
Nobody. NOBODY !! Except some murder threats and other criminal cases of harras and behavior ( like sexual or racist ) get his acount banned in less than 3 bans !
He had multiple accounts and got then banned one by one in small punishments like for verbal abuse now and then.
You have no reason to get mad as Riot punishment for him has been the more severe since ever !
Riot not only did remove his acounts but ALSO did FORBID him to participate in ANY championship as a PERSON ! No matter what account he uses. This is far more severe than a normal player ban.

  95. This is realtive, i had both cases i punished being pardoned and cases i pardoned being punished (other than te ones i did the winning vote of course ), it is all about the other people opinions that got the same case, luck and statistic.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Indeed, a Mac address is read by the driver when sent to the modem, there is NO WAY to stop someone from playing any game.

    ReplyDelete
  97. The rules are for everyone PRO or not.
This is the most severe punishment riot issued not only banning his acounts after SEVEN earlier punishments, but forbid him of participating in ANY CHAMPIONSHIP for a year.
Nine tribunal cases and EIGHT punish votes is a big overlook on him from being a PRO, but he have overdone it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah riot thinks on the money the player spent in a free to play game.
This is one of the reasons they are so tolerate with all the players punished.

    ReplyDelete
  99. There are plenty of ways, but the AVERAGE person who plays League wouldnt be able to figure it out. There would be tracking and IP blahblahblah.

Im saying its possible to keep people from just creating a smurf account, but to integrate it would be exceptionally hard and probably wouldnt be worth Riots time/money.

    ReplyDelete
  100. He shouldnt have continued to be a pro player in the first place. Pro players should be held to a HIGHER STANDARD, seeing as they make money for it. Its a JOB, its not a GAME. And I dont know ANY JOB that will give you NINE CHANCES to be a better person and not harass and insult your fellow 'coworkers' or 'people that come into the store' (players).

    ReplyDelete
  101. Those arent pro players. In fact, most of those people arent even streaming! They dont make money OFF of league, they just put money INTO league.

Go ahead and point me to the forum members that have ALL the skins *AND* are pro players/streamers. Ill wait.

Just because you spend a lot of money doesnt mean youre exempt from the rules. In fact, as a pro player/streamer you should be held to a HIGHER standard, BECAUSE of how public you are. NINE TIMES! Shouldve been TWO OR THREE and then perma-ban.

  102. Good god he can't even spell... T_T

    Score one for the tribunal.

  103. Well I can see how such a great player could get so mad at the average. I am an average player. As an average player, I have a hard time holding my tongue when I get qued up with unexperienced players that do stupid things, it's hard to keep in mind they don't have the same experience in the heat of a match.

  104. Only former IWillDominate downvoted this.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Thank god. Iwilldominate was one of the BIG reasons dignitas lost so many of their games...

  108. That's no excuse to be an ass during a game. Lol certainly isn't a perfect community, but if someone is going to flame every single fail the enemy team has, then the game can get infuriating fast. League is competitive, just in a different way than DotA. And in regards to your second point, it's actually more like you telling them "No, fuck YOU" right back and showing them the door. You probably already knew that, considering.

  111. Thanks for attacking me and calling me out on being the a part of the players ruining the game for others. Who's toxic now?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Those are good words.

    ReplyDelete
  113. They won't know it's a smurf if he behaves on it. IP ban can be gotten around either by switching ISP or using a VPN.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Not me for sure. I've never been banned nor received a warning, you should learn what being toxic means in the context of league of legends. I assume you have at leasy received a warning, and that you think that is a normal and acceptable thing, based on this quote:

"That's pretty harsh - chances are if you play League you've gotten warned at least once for inappropriate behavior."

If you think it is fine and normal to receive a warning it means you think it is fine to harass and exhibit bad behaviour that leads to that. Thinking it is fine to do that is what makes people do it. Calling you out doesn't mean I do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  115. No, I've not gotten warned for toxic behavior, I just accept the fact that as human beings its normal to lose tempers or behave irrationally, and lash out at those who are causing or perceiving to cause the anger. I'll admit, I've done it myself but I've never been warned nor banned.

If you claim to be above human emotion then you are either a robot or a liar.

    ReplyDelete
  116. And you will never receive a warning or a ban for that, it looks like you are just ignorant of how the system works. RIOT knows anyone can lose their tempers occassionally, their thinking is you can have a bad day or be frustrated and vent it on the game. I'll assume that is what happens to you from time to time.

You need to consistently exhibit toxic behaviour, having a high percentage of reports to even be considered for the tribunal. If you consistently lose your tempers in the game then you have a problem. So now you know that having a warning or ban means repeteadly ruining other player games in a consistent way and I hope you'd change your opinion on that being fine.

Thirdly, why would I claim to be above human emotion? I am not and at the same time the maximum I've lashed out against other players through the chat is sarcasm, because this is just a game in the first place, so I will not be much affected, and because I have enough autocontrol in the second place, whenever I get too carried away.

  117. i feel that the biggest problem with this is that the na scene has many tsm fans
and when they see IWillDominate in there tribunal screen they think
"omg its i will dominate hes on dig there a rival to tsm i want to take im out"
i feel that riot should take out the tribunal system because people think they have power to the extent of being an immature tyrant.
